Frankonia Heidelberg

A short overview about the history ...

DThe first fraternity "Frankonia" was founded in Heidelberg in 1833. After 11 members participated in a democratic revolutionary assault on the Frankfurt Guardhouse, the fraternity was banned.

A second "Frankonia" was founded in 1846 with the participation of Joseph Viktor von Scheffel, a prominent Heidelberg poet and writer.

The third and current Frankonia was founded again on November 15, 1856. It traces its roots to the liberal German fraternity "Burschenschaft" movement, bears the motto "United and Loyal" and presents the colors gold, black red and gold.

Frankonia House was opened in 1893. The celebratory speech was held by our member Mönkeberg, at that time the Mayor of Hamburg.

In 1936, the National Socialists prohibited all fraternities, including Frankonia. During the Second World War, Frankonia's members continued the traditions of Frankonia under an altered name.

In 1956, once again as the Burschenschaft Frankonia, the Frankonia family celebrated its 100th anniversary.

In 1984, the residence next to Frankonia House was officially opened.
